Working is something I thought would be boring when I was younger. Turns out, if you work at a job you enjoy, it never really feels like work. Aside from the obvious perks of working, like getting paid, you get to meet new people and as a scientist, try to make a difference in the world.

Every scientist is different, but I work 8-4, or 9-5 monday to friday. On saturdays I teach 8-12 year olds about marine biology too. Some days I work outside at the coastline running experiments, taking measurements and counting animals. Other days I am inside in the laboratory studying animals under the microscope or using the aquariums. I also have to do computer work like reading about other scientists research and I write reports explaining what sort of things I have discovered. As most people spend 8 hours a day working, it important to find something you enjoy doing. Then it never really feels like work!

I love my work as a geologist/fossil researcher (palaeontologist)! The truth is that if you are a researcher or a scientist, it often doesn’t feel like a job at all. My fossils are such cute and curious little creatures to study! For example, I get to imagine what they would have looked like in life and how they would have swum and interacted with other organisms in the ocean 300 million years ago.
Generally my work is split between time outdoors looking for fossils and time at the office thinking about the ammonoid fossils I have in front of me, writing and reading. You can pretty much plan your day as you wish when you are a researcher, so that’s nice. I’d recommend doing this to anyone who is curious about the world around them! 😉
