Science is the art of Curiosity. Are you a curious person? Then you will love some fields of science, and you probably have what it takes to be a scientist! Anybody who questions the world around us uses science to get answers.

Our job is great: first we learn what is already known about a special field (my field is venomous animals) and once we know a good deal of it, we try to answer questions that have never been answered before. As a scientist, I feel like a discoverer and a bit of an adventurer. In my research, I go where nobody ever went before. The unknown is so exciting!

I chose science because I always have questions in my mind. I love looking for answers, I love “cracking the code” after weeks or years of questioning. There is also the fact that I do something that is good for Humanity: I am adding my tiny little contribution to Human knowledge, and it feels great. Then there is the fact that I always loved creepy crawlies, weird animals and reptiles. The best decision was to turn my passion into a career.

Finally, I love the teaching aspect of university research: after I discover things, I can teach them to a new group of students. I know that I am helping the younger generation to become better scientists.

I really like science because it’s all about learning more about the world around you. You get to ask questions, no matter how strange they are, and then try find logical answers to them. During my leaving cert years in school, I really enjoyed studying biology and I was very good at it, so this led me to continue on into studying science in college. During college I got to study geology, maths (which is difficult but really important), biology and geography. You learn so much – how the Earth developed and how life on it evolved – really interesting!

As a scientist, you have wonderful opportunities to investigate questions that interest you and to answer these questions you get to use and develop really cool pieces of technology, visit beautiful places, see wonderful animals and work alongside really interesting people. It’s really satisfying to get answers to your questions too! Sometimes these answers are really important for society, whether they teach us more about the world around us, help us conserve animals or find better treatments for cancer. Science is incredibly diverse and endlessly interesting!
